Spoof emails purporting to come from Premium Data Support
On Wednesday last week, staff began receiving spoof emails purporting to come from Premium Data Support and claiming that a "critical update" was required. The emails had addresses showing that they came from Russia.
We quickly composed our own email for a customer-wide mail-out to advise that the "critical update" email originated from spammers/spoofers and should be disregarded.
Since then, we have determined that one of our servers was hacked by a "brute force" method and a table containing email addresses and associated Premium Data user Ids was stolen. This server was taken off-line as soon as we became aware of the spoofing campaign.
Premium Data customers should be reminded that we do not retain their credit card details, and that no information in that regard exists on our servers or anywhere in our possession.
We have since become aware that another company similar to ours (market data/software) was hacked a few days later and email addresses stolen.
We would like to remind customers that unsolicited emails containing links to executable files (files containing an .exe extension) should always be treated with great suspicion. Spoofers and phishers rely on making their emails appear to originate from a trusted source.
If in any doubt at all, don't click!
